Reiche To Be
Cross Examined By Calderón Lawyer
Today, Monday, will be a "caliente" (hot)
day in the courtrooom as lawyers for former
Costa Rican president, Rafael Ángel Calderón
Fournier, will get an opportunity to cross
examine the testimony of former Corporacion
Fischel president, Walter Reiche.
Calderón, Reiche and six others are facing
trial in the what is called "Fischel-Caja"
scandal, where the accused of taking part in
defrauding the Caja Costarrisence de Seguro
Social (CCSS) - Caja - of millions in a
contract to purchase medial equipment from
Finland, brokered by the Corporacion Fischel.
Reiche last week, in his testimony, pointed
the finger at Calderón, telling the court
that money from the Finnish deal went to
Calderón and then was later told to take one
for the former president, to keep quiet
about the deal while sitting in jail under
preventive detention.
Calderón has denied the accusations against
him and refuted the Reiche testimony. The
former president's lawyer, Juan Marcos
Rivero, said last week that Reiche is trying
to save himself and his testimony is false.
On Friday, Rivero met with the other accused
and their lawyers, though details of the
meeting were not made public.
When asked, Rivero would comment on the
relationship between his client and Juan
Carlos Sánchez, Gerardo Bolaños or Eliseo
Vargas, the others accused, only say to get
a reading on where their defence strategy
is.
Rivero would only say that Reiche has the
right to his own defense strategy, who seems
to have broken away from a unified front of
the other accused.
