Blue Zones Find People Living To 100

The Blue Zones is a book by Dan Buettner which talks about the four areas through out the word where people live to be over 100 and healthy. In Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica the water that flows through the hills is hard which means stronger bones and muscles that work better.

Calcium magnesium will replace that water for those of us not living there. The elderly live with their children. Having a sense of purpose is a key to a long life. I wrote about having a cause outside ourselves as a key to being happy.

The people in Nicoya pick fruit off a tree. They do not eat food for mass distribution. Corn is soaked in ash which releases calcium. In Nicoya grinding corn is exercise. Working outside build up the quadriceps and even at 99 one man had a flat belly and a strong chest. Dr. Oz examined this man who has the lungs and heart of someone 45 years old. They eat a light dinner and get a moderate amount of sense.

What we can do is eat eggs, dairy, kale, and broccoli. We should add Vitamin D to our regiment. Squats (even just getting up and down in a straight back posture from a chair) are one of the most important types of exercise because they keep our quadriceps strong.

The people in Sardinia, Italy live long lives where we find the most males over 100 in the world. Wine, working out in the fields which isn't stressful or strenuous but it is low impact cardiovascular work. They eat cheese (Omega 3), goat milk may protect us from Alzheimer's and heart disease. They eat a lean plant based diet with very little meat. Sardinians walk a lot, laugh often, and enjoy their families and friends.

Loma Linda, CA is the place in the U.S. where people live the longest. Many of them are Seven Day Adventists who allow God to take over their lives minimizing worry and stress. One 94 year old doctor, Dr. Ellsworth Wareham, is a vegan. This doctor likes to be around young people. This particular doctor takes no medications and still operates. His sense of purpose keeps him going. He was on the show with his wife and are truly amazing.

A 103- year old woman, Marge Jetton, lifts weights and rides a stationary bike. An optimistic and sensible look at life keep people healthy. People in Loma Linda eat nuts, beans, tofu, spaghetti with walnut balls (recipe can be found at oprah.com), and lentils. They create a sacred time for themselves, give back and eat a plant based diet.

Okinawa, Japan has the healthiest and longest living people on earth. They have fewer heart attacks and cancer than we do. They believe in having a purpose in life. Headstands and exercise, gardening, social support networks, eating natural foods including fish, and most importantly to them is that the stop eating when they are 80% full.
