Emergency Move to Save Cuban Coffee Harvest
YATERAS - An emergency mobilization engages in saving 100 thousand bags of coffee affected by hurricane Ike in this eastern Cuban locality of Guantanamo province.

Daily Juventud Rebelde on Sunday says that volunteers of different professions are set on harvesting the greatest amount possible of coffee beans in the areas hit by hurricane winds, second greatest producer of coffee in Cuba.

According to preliminary assessments, Guantanamo lost over 328 thousand bags of coffee apart from lesser damage to the roofing of coffee farm facilities.

Emilio Rivera, oficial of the Provincial Coffee Direction, assured that great part of the fallen beans can be recovered, if they are picked and processed before they rot.

The enterprise thus works to improve access roads to the coffee plantations in order to take out the collected fruit as quickly as possible.
