Laura Leaving
Vice-Presidency on
October 1
Vice-president and
ministra de Justicia y
Gracia, Laura Chinchilla
Miranda, is expected to
resign her post on
October 1, when she
officially announces her
candidacy for the
Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN)
nomination for the 2010
presidential elections.
Chinchilla, although, is
not expected to leave
her post until October
12.
The October 1 date was
chosen to coincide with
the 57th anniversary of
the founding of the PLN
party.
The ministro de la
Presidencia, Rodrigo
Arias, denied any
knowledge of the
Chinchilla resignation
or that the current
viceministra de Obras
Públicas y Transportes,
Viviana Martín, will
take over Chinchilla's
portfolio at Justicia y
Gracia.
Arias would not also
comment on who would
take over the
vice-presidency. With
the departure of second
vice-president, Kevin
Casa, last year, the
country will be without
a vice-president unless
a replacement is
announced.
Chinchilla, even though
she is the preference of
president Oscar Arias to
lead the PLN party and
succeed him, will be
facing stiff competition
from fellow cabinet
minister, the former
ministro de Seguridad
Pública, Fernando
Berrocal and Johnny
Araya Monge, the mayor
of San José, and
possibly the ministro de
Hacienda, Guillermo
Zúñiga, who is expected
to make his announcement
soon.
