Guatemala to Host Social
Forum
GUATEMALA CITY -
Hundreds of social
organizations will
participate in the Third
Social Forum of the
Americas between the 7th
and 12th of October at
the University of San
Carlos of Guatemala.
“Delegations from all
countries of the
continent are coming,
from Canada and to the
Patagonia, along with
others from different
parts of the world,”
organizing committee
member Domingo Hernández
told Prensa Latina.
Among the groups with
largest representation
Dominguez mentioned the
National Indian-Andinian
Coordinator, Caribbean
associations, tribal
communities from the US,
Canada and Australia.
Also various social
movements, women groups,
student-led
associations, farmer
unions and environment
defenders, signed up for
the meeting.
The promoters of this
regional meeting hope to
bring together close to
10 thousand people who
will debate about
different topics, among
them the legitimate
defense of land and
territory, the actual
food crisis and the
overuse of natural
resources.
“We are going to put on
the table various topics
that affect the Indian
people in this
continent. We have the
same goals and face very
common problems,” added
Hernandez.
In total there will be
six main themes to
debate, which include
the negative impact of
neoliberalism and the
free trade agreement in
the region, repression
against social
movements, cultural
diversity, global
warming and political
changes in Latin
America.
During the six days of
the events, more than
350 activities are
scheduled, that include
seminaries, conferences,
workshops and cultural
events with the
participation of known
artist from Puerto Rico,
Mexico, Ecuador,
Guatemala, Venezuela and
Cuba. |
