Chinchilla Says Zuņiga Decision Changes Nothing
Costa Rica's vice president and ministra de Justicia, Laura Chinchilla, said that the decision of ministro de Hacienda, Guillermo Zúņiga, to run for the nomination for the Partido Liberaciķn Nacional (PLN) for the 2010 presidential elections, changes nothing.

"No cambian Nada" where the words spoken by Chinchilla whose presidential aspirations are still to be made public after her fellow cabinet minister made his decision public on Friday.

Chinchilla did not say any more than the few words yesterday after leaving a meeting with Costa Rican president Oscar Arias at his home in Rohrmoser.

Chinchilla is seen as the favourite to lead the PLN party and win the 2010 presidential elections and is president Arias' choice to take over when he leaves office.

The Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) - elections supreme court - scolded the president earlier this year for his public comments of his wishes that a woman replace him, offering no doubt that his comments were directly referring to Chinchilla. Since then Arias has been quiet - at least publicly - on his wishes for a president Chinchilla.

Chinchilla has preferred not to comment on the subject and has been concentrating on her work, whose role in government has increased since the her appointment in 2006, as has her public visibility.

Zuņiga said during his announcement to seek the party nomination that he has the backing of the "Arismo" - a group of staunch Arias supporters - and the support of the Arias brothers (president Arias and his brother, the ministro de la presidencia, Rodrigo).

However, president Oscar publicly denied any favouritsm for Zuņiga following the Hacienda minister's comments. "I have never spoken to don Guillermo on election matters", said Arias.

When, and not if, Chinchilla does make her decision to run, the Arias cabinet will be short to key ministers, as both Zuņiga and Chinchilla will have to resign their posts not later than January, who will face opposition from San José mayor, Johnny Araya and former security minister, Fernando Berrocal, for the party nomination.
