Millions of Latin
Americans Lack Fresh
Water
GUATEMALA -
The TLA (Latin American
Water Court) denounced
on Wednesday in
Guatemala that at least
77 million people in the
region lack accessible
freshwater, a vital
liquid for all.
TLA representative
Javier Bogantes noticed
that the absence of
legal controls on the
use of the water
reserves has caused a
crisis of incalculable
consequences for the
regional people.
Despite the major
water-bearing reserves
of the planet are
located in Latin America
and the Caribbean, the
problems derived from
the wrong use of this
natural source puts at
risk the health and the
life of many of its
inhabitants, Bogantes
denounced.
Interviewed by Prensa
Latina on the
consequences of this
problem, the specialist
explained there are
already confrontations
between neighboring
communities disputing
the access to springs in
some regions of the
world.
Unfortunately, it is not
an exaggeration to say
that the wars of the
21st century might take
place for disputing the
control of greater water
reserves, he specified.
TLA will session on
September 8-12 in the
colonial city of Antigua
Guatemala (Old
Guatemala) in order to
analyze several
denunciations on
contamination of water
sources,
over-exploitation of
this resource and
deterioration of several
river basins.
Latin American Water
Court is an authority of
ethical nature, the
verdicts by which do not
have binding character
but they constitute a
moral sanction for
companies and States
that act irresponsibly,
Bogantes assured. |
