Constitutional Court
Says Padre Minor Has
Right To Air His Radio
Program From A Prison
Telephone
Jailed Catholic priest,
padre Minor Calvo, will
be permitted to air his
radio program “Jesús
está vivo” from jail as
the Sala IV
(Constitutional Court)
ruled in his favour
after he appealed a
decision by prison
officials denying him
the right to use the
public telephones at the
San Sebastián jail to
transmit his program.
In addition, the Sala
ordered the Ministerio
de Justicia and prison
officials to provide,
withing three days, a
written explanation for
denying the priest his
right to free speech.
Calvo contracted Radio
Centro to air his daily
program broadcast live
from a prison telephone.
Last Thursday, the first
day of the radio
program, Calvo was
yanked off the air only
after 10 minutes, and
threatened with
sanctions if he
continued.
Prison officials say
that the priest is
carrying on an activity
for which he was
sentenced to prison.
Padre Minor was found
guilty of fraud
following the demise of
Radio María where he
hosted a similar radio
program, bilking
audiences of money.
Calvo, in a telephone
interview with Igancio
Santos of Telenocitias
assured that he is not
asking for money from
his listeners.
