Mobile Weight Scale To
Control Truck Overweight
The ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes
(MOPT) will get tough on
heavy trucks on the
nation's roads,
introducing a mobile
scale to weight trucks
beginning on October 1.
MOPT minister, Karla
González, said the
mobile scales wills be
used to control
overweight of commercial
vehicles and will be
removed from the roads
if found to exceed
established limits.
The minister added that
for the truck to be able
to continue to circulate
it must remove the
excess weight. There
will be no exceptions,
said the minister, as it
the MOPT gets tough on
truckers who continually
operate their vehicles
in excess of limits.
In total there will be
five scales in operation
at the docks in Moín,
Limón, Caldera and Villa
Briceño (Golfito-Interamericana
Sur). However, being
mobile, they could show
up anywhere in the
country as MOPT
officials target problem
areas.
The scales are connected
to a computer that will
provide the trucker a
printed report of the
weight reported by the
scale and cost the MOPT
¢2 billion colones.
Minister González
assures that her
Tránsito (traffic)
officials are empowered
to prevent overweight
trucks from circulating,
something that has been
taken lightly in the
past.
