Chinchilla Expected To Resign Next Month As VP To Run For President
Costa Rican vice-president, Laura Chinchilla, is expected to announce her resignation next month and announce her presidential candidacy for the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) party, for the 2010 presidential elections.

Although the VP, who also holds the position of the Ministra de Justicia (Justice Minister), has not made her candidacy official, not has yet tendered her resignation to president Arias.

She did, however, comment during a recent cabinet meeting of her desire to be president.

"It is a legitimate aspiration, especially for people who've been close to the civil service. One cannot be clearing up what is said or not said. I have to concentrate on my work", said Chinchilla.

In many words, the VP has opened the door that she is intending to run for the party nomination and wants to succeed Arias, who earlier this year, without naming Chinchilla directly, stated that he would like to see a woman succedd him.

Chinchilla will have to wait resign her VP chair until next month due to the fact that president Arias is currently of the country on a tour of Europe, due back on the 12th, and then will follow with a trip to the United States between September 22 and 25.

In addition to the Chinchilla resignation, the president of the Legislative Assembly, Francisco Antonio Pacheo, will also have to resign his post as he is the successor in line to replace Arias when the president is not in the country or incapacitaded.

Chinchilla will face some strong competition for the PLN nomination as the mayor of San José, Johnny Araya Monge, and the former ministro de Seguridad , Fernando Berrocal Soto, have already made official their intention to seek the party leadership nomination.
