Public Transportation
Paralyzed in Guatemala
GUATEMALA -
Amatitlan municipality
remained without
transportation to the
capital for the second
consecutive day on
Tuesday due to protests
by drivers, who demand
protection against
extortion and attacks.
Discontent was triggered
by the killing of a
worker from the sector
in the said locality,
about 19 miles south
from Guatemala City.
Drivers denounced they
are all the time targets
of attacks by gangs and
must pay huge amounts of
money every week to be
allowed to operate.
When someone resists
extortion or get into
arrears of their
payments are attacked
and often killed without
any protection from
police, they added.
They say they risk their
lives in serving the
population and are not
receiving a proper
response by the
country's security
apparatus.
Tens of thousands of
people commute from
Amatitlan to the
capital, mostly using
public transportation.
