Padre Minor Cannot
Broadcast His Radio Show
From Jail Without A
Permit
Jailed Catholic priest,
padre Minor Calvo, sat
on Tuesday with his
hands in handcuffed, his
mouth taped and a sign
on his chest, protesting
the decision by the
Ministerio de Justicia
to not allow him to
continue his radio
program from the San
Sebastián jail.
Padre Minor was on the
air last Thursday with
his radio program
broadcast live from a
pay telephone in the
jail through Radio
Centro, which he
contracted for ˘750.000
colones monthly.
After only 10 minutes on
air, prison officials
yanked the plug on the
program.
Following a series of
public comments by both
padre Minor, prison
officials and officials
of Justicia, the priest
was to have been allowed
to continue his plans
for the program,
exercising his right of
free speech and the use
of the public telephones
in the jail, a right
granted to all
prisoners.
However, on Monday,
Justicia officials ruled
that the priest could
not air his program
while behind bars and
will face sanctions from
prison officials if he
continues to do.
Sanctions include a
reprimand and or a
transfer to another
jail.
The reasons given by the
Ministerio de Justicia
for not allowing the
program is that padre
Minor did not obtain
permission for the
broadcast and now has
three days to appeal the
decision by prison
officials.
