Teachers Planning
Another Strike
Teachers may soon go
back on strike if the
Ministerio de Educación
Pública (MEP) and the
Asociación de Profesores
de Segunda Enseñanza
(APSE) come to an
agreement how to apply
the salary adjustment
for the teachers.
Although the government
approved an extra salary
of 6.42%, it has refused
to apply the extra wage
to teachers of the "bachilleres"
and MEP technical staff,
the same way it did back
in 2006.
The government said it
would pay "bachillerato"
teachers and technical
staff ony 5.96%.
The teachers union,
APSE, said its
membership is not
prepared to give up the
difference and will take
to the streets next
Monday (September 8)
unless an agreement is
reached before.
Beatriz Ferreto,
president of APSE,
explained that the union
will demand the payment
for its members or call
a nationwide strike.
Ferreto said that
following the strike
last April, it was clear
that the payment
promised would included
in the 2009 budget and
for the following years.
The union is also
calling on the
government to fulfill
its agreement with the
teachers signed by
president Oscar Arias,
in 1990, during his
first term in office.
