US Doubts Fairness of
Nicaragua Elections
MANAGUA (AP) - The U.S.
Embassy in Nicaragua has
released a statement
criticizing the
country's delays in
accrediting election
observers, saying it
places in doubt the
fairness of upcoming
municipal balloting.
A statement by State
Department spokesman
Robert Wood — and a
second declaration
issued by a group of
former presidents from
the Americas — also
criticize Nicaraguan
President Daniel
Ortega's vocal attacks
on critics.
Ortega's government has
come under fire for
barring two opposition
parties from fielding
mayoral candidates in
the Nov. 9 election, and
for police raids against
non-governmental
organizations.
The government press
office said it had no
immediate reaction to
Friday's statements.
