Bolivia Congress Readies
Referendum
LA PAZ - Bolivia's House
of Representatives
chairman Edmundo Novillo,
from the ruling Movement
towards Socialism (MAS),
addressed key issues
Friday for an intensive
Congressional agenda
before the Jan. 25
constitutional
referendum.
According to Novillo,
before people vote for
the new Constitution,
the parliament must
approve laws held up in
analysis like that of
the compulsory military
service and overseas
voting.
He also stated that the
appointment by judiciary
authorities and speakers
of the National
Electoral Court (CNE)
for the organization of
the consultation is
vital.
Novillo also mentioned
as a cardinal point an
audit of the electoral
register, a measure for
which the CNE is
responsible, as well as
to increasing clarity of
the registration office,
he noted.
The deputy said that the
country will analyze
next days the
advisability of
suspending the election
of prefects from La Paz
and Cochabamba, also
slated for January 25,
2009.
The aim, he noted, is
that authorities from
the nine departments are
elected April 4, 2010,
as establishes one of
the transitory
regulations of the
constitutional text to
be voted.
