Former President Would
Build 120.000 Free Homes
If Elected Again
Former Costa Rican
president, Rafael Ángel
Calderón Fournier, says
his top priority, if he
makes to the
presidential office
again, will be to build
some 120.000 free homes
and to hand out 40.000
lots under the "bono
gratuito" program that
was created during his
first term in office.
The Calderón proposal
would guarantee 160.000
families a dignified
home and form part of
the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC)
party 2010 presidential
campaign focus.
According to Calderón,
Pavas, the area west of
San José will be the
focus of his priorities
as thousands of families
live in "inhuman"
conditions.
Calderón explained that
under his plan those who
have homes but cannot
afford to repair them
can also count on help
from his government by
way of a bond directly
with the INSTITUTO MIXTO
DE AYUDA SOCIAL (IMAS).
The former president is
gearing up to run for
the party's nomination
now that the PUSC board
of directors decided
over the weekend to
remove the obstacles
faced by the former
president to run, mainly
that he is still facing
criminal charges in the
Caja-Fischel.
Calderón is confident
that his trial will
begin soon and will be
found not guilty in the
Caja-Fischel case, where
millions of a
us$39 million deal to
purchase medical
equipment for the social
security, went into
pockets of Fischel and
government officials.
