Chinchilla One Step
Closer To The PLN
Nomination
Laura Chinchilla Miranda
is one step closer to
being president of the
country, as the Tribunal
Supremo de Elecciones
(TSE), officially
removed her as the
country's vice-president
and Ministra de Justicia,
allowing her to begin
her campaign to seek out
the PLN party
nomination.
Chinchilla's resignation
was read out the same
day in the Legislative
Assembly floor.
Doña Laura is seeking
the nomination for the
Partido Liberacíon
Nacional (PLN), running
against San José mayor,
Johnny Araya and former
ministro de Seguridad,
Fernando Berrocal, who
have declared their
intentions.
With Chinchilla's
departure, the
government is now
without a
vice-president, whose
duties fall on the
president of the
Legislative Assembly,
Francisco Antonio
Pacheco, to assume the
duties of the president
in the event Oscar Arias
is away from the country
or is incapacitated.
Chinchilla's resignation
also means that both
Araya and Berrocal must
step up their efforts to
seek out the party
nomination if they want
to lead the party into
the 2010 presidential
elections.
Although Chinchilla is
said to have the support
of 18 of the 25 PLN
legislators and is the
front runner to take the
party nomination.
However, many Costa
Ricans feel that she may
not win the election,
feeling that she
represents too much the
"Arias" ideals and
arrogance.
