Former Chilean President
Not To Run For Next
Presidency
SANTIAGO - Former
Chilean President
Ricardo Lagos Escobar
has said that he will
not compete in next
year's presidential
election.
"I'm not going to be a
candidate," Lagos said
in an interview with the
El Mercurio newspaper
published Sunday.
Lagos said he will
support any candidate
chosen by the
center-left ruling
coalition for the
presidency.
He added his current
priority is to help
candidates from the
ruling coalition win the
municipal elections
slated for late October.
Lagos served as
president from
2000-2006. When he left
office in March 2006, he
saw approval ratings of
over 70 percent.
Since May 2007, he has
acted as a special UN
envoy on climate change.
Chile is to hold
presidential election
next December. Possible
presidential contenders
from the ruling
coalition include former
foreign minister Soledad
Alvear and Jose Miguel
Insulza, the incumbent
secretary general of the
Organization of American
States.
