President Arias Offers
Support For María José
Costa Rica president,
Oscar Arias, has been
known for his appetite
to brush up with film
and music personalities,
the latest being the
Colombian artist, Juanes,
who met with the
president at his home
following an official
request by Casa
Presidencial to the
musician's management
for a meeting.
Mel Gibson, has been
also been a frequent
visit to the Arias home
in Rohrmoser.
However, this time, the
prez is setting his
sights on a would be
star that in his words,
would make Costa Rica
proud. That would be
star is María José
Castillo, who could take
the title Latin American
Idol this Wednesday.
And to ensure that María
José has a shot at the
title, president Arias
and the ministra de
Cultura, María Elena
Carballo, on Friday
signed a decree that
María José's
presentation on the
Latin American Idol is
declared a "cultural
interest", thus allowing
the government to divert
funds to promote support
for the would be star.
At a meeting with María
José's family over the
weekend, the prez wants
to make sure that she
has all the support of
Costa Ricans and all
over Latin America.
"She has managed to
touch the hearts of all
Costa Ricans, in every
corner of the country,
of all social classes
and has united Costa
Ricans who wish her a
victory. If she raises
her voice, not only will
the angels hear her but
we are also going to
take that trophy and
that is why we should
feel very proud", said
Arias.
President Arias donated
personally ¢1 million
colones to the parents
of María José - José
Luis Castillo and María
Eugenia Gutiérrez - so
that they can send more
messages to the ensure
their daughter's win.
In addition María José
is expected to be named
the "mariscal" (grand
marshall) of this year's
Festival de la Luz in
San José.
