Traffic Police And Truckers Association Join Forces To Reduce Accidents
The Policía de Tránsito and the Cámara Nacional de Transportistas de Carga (Canatrac) has united to put an end to traffic accidents caused by runaway tractor trailers.

According to Germán Marín, director of the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police), there will be more spot checks while Canatrac will try to instill preventive and responsible driving practices by its members.

Fatal accidents involving heavy trucks have been common in the country, were 234 traffic accidents deaths have been recorded this year to September 30.

Marín said that the spotchecks are to reveal mechanical problems with trucks, like worn tires or lack of the vehicular inspection certificate.

The traffic police spotchecks will concentrate some of the most heavy truck traffic routes, like Ruta Uno, the Interamerican norte to Peñas Blancas - Nicaraguan border); Ruta 2, the Intermaericana Sur, to Paso Canoas at the Panama border; and Ruta 32, San José - Limón route.

For its part, Canatrac will offering training to drivers of its member companies, that will include defensive driving practices, vehicle maintenance, a review of the rules of the road and the way to reduce fuel consumption, among other subjects.

According to Francisco Quirós, head of Canatrac, 85% of the country's truck fleet is associated with his group and will use the results of a study by a consulting group hired to detail findings of the realities on today's roads.
