Heavy Rain Floods Dozens
Of Homes And Causes
Traffic Chaos in
Desamparados
Without a doubt October
is the worst month of
the rainy season. And in
only the first few days
the month, residents of
Desamparados, on the
south side of San José,
lived the horror of what
could be a long, very
long, month.
Dozens of homes were
flooded. A similar
number of cars were
filled with water up to
the roof.
Thousands, in
desperation, found
shelter from the heavy
rain that fell on the
area and the flooding
caused by the overflow
of the rivers Patarrá,
Damas and San Antonio.
Desamparados mayor,
Maureen Fallas, was
quick to assure
residents that the
municipality would be
doing all it can to
provide relief.
"The river (Damas)
caused flooding in the
areas of Patarrá, San
Antonio, Dos Cercas and
Gravilias. There are
many homes flooded in
those areas", said
Fallas last night.
The heavy rain began in
the early afternoon when
the grey clouds became
almost black and the
downpour was endless for
some hours. At 5pm
things got worse when
the regular Friday
afternoon traffic became
chaotic, as some of the
main routes filled with
mud and debris, blocking
passage. Many, who take
the bus from work were
forced to get off and
walk long distances due
to the traffic chaos.
Mayor Fallas said that
today (Saturday) will
begin the clean up of
the roads and the
assessment of the damage
caused by the rain and
floods.
In Liberia, Guanacaste,
the Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE),
reported 200 homes
fooded in barrio Corazón
de Jesús, mainly due to
storm sewers backing up
and not being able to
handle the volume of
rain that fell on the
area.
The CNE is maintaining a
"yellow" alert for the
Pacific coastline and a
"green" alert for the
Central Valley (San
José).
