Nicaraguan President
Accused Of Persecuting
Journalists
MANAGUA - A Nicaraguan
journalist says the
administration of
President Daniel Ortega
is persecuting his
organization for its
criticism of the
government.
Carlos Chamorro Barrios'
Centre of Media
Investigations is one of
700 groups being
investigated for alleged
money laundering.
He called a news
conference Wednesday to
deny the allegations and
accuse the government of
trying to silence its
critics.
He also asked the
Nicaraguan Centre for
Human Rights to monitor
the legal case against
him.
The government claims
Chamorro Barrios is
illegally channeling
money from foreign
governments to civil
organizations in
Nicaragua not legally
allowed to receive such
funds.
He is the son of former
President Violeta
Chamorro, and hosts
daily and weekly news
and analysis TV shows.
Violeta Barrios de
Chamorro was the
forty-eighth president
of Nicaragua, serving
from April 1990, when
she unseated Daniel
Ortega. She was
supported by many,
including a
fourteen-party
anti-Sandinista alliance
known as the National
Opposition Union (Unión
Nacional Opositora,
UNO), an alliance that
ranged from
conservatives and
liberals to communists.
She left office in
January 1997.
