Limón Carnaval Cancelled
The ministra de Salud,
María Luisa Ávila Agüero,
announced yesterday that
Limón won't have its
"carnival" this year,
refusing to issue the
Comité Organizador de
los Carnavales de Limón
2008 a permit due to the
mounting garbage problem
in the port city.
The Health minister said
that the annual Carnaval
produces double the
amount of garbage that
is normal for the city
and that the organizers
failed to provide a plan
to remove the garbage,
that could pose a health
risk,
Minister Avila added
that a majority of the
accumulated waste
contributes to the
Dengue problem and that
the efforts to reduce
Dengue in the area
during the last several
months cannot be thrown
to the wayside.
The Carnaval was set to
begin on October 10.
