Venezuela for Summit
of the Poor
Caracas - After rating
as disappointing the
meeting over the
financial crisis by the
most industrialized
countries, Venezuela is
promoting a world summit
to assess the problem
with the criteria of the
poor too.
The initiative is
included in a draft
resolution entitled The
World Financial and
Economic Crisis and its
Consequences, presented
Monday before the UN.
According to Venezuelan
authorities, the
document is intended to
reflect the concerns of
countries, particularly
developing ones, over
the impact of the
current world financial
crisis.
The Venezuelan effort
includes consultations
with the group of Latin
American and Caribbean
countries at the UN, the
Group of 77 plus China,
and the permanent
representative of France
as head of the European
Union, among others.
The Project warns the
financial crisis
originated in the US is
spreading to all the
regions, with
devastating effects on
the gross domestic
product of developed
countries, just to
mention some.
Venezuela hopes that the
Summit becomes a
historic meeting where a
fairer and more human
international financial
system should be
designed, fully
committed to the
development and needs of
the poorest people. |
