Russia Interested in Promoting Ties with Colombia
Bogotá - Russian interest to promote relations with Latin America, included Colombia, was expressed today by Russian Foreign Minister, Serguei Lavrov.

The Russian FM made a brief visit this Wednesday during which he talked with his Colombian peer, Jaime Bermudez, on a wide agenda that included trade and economy issues.

In a press round after that meeting, Lavrov extolled the intention to expand relations with nations in this geographic area in topics of mutual interest. He said Latin America is changing in its economy and infrastructure and "we would like to participate in these processes."

He also showed interest in cooperation to fight terrorism and drug trafficking and the need to accelerate the carrying out of standing cooperation accords.

He seemed confident in a visit of President Alvaro Uribe soon to Russia.

Attending to the insistence of reporters about relations with Venezuela, Lavrov, stressed there should be no worry about naval maneuvers to be held with military forces of that South American nation.

On this issue, Lavrov assured they will be held far from Colombian borders and that never would these put in danger the security of nations of this area.

On the same subject, Colombian FM Jaime Bermudez, discarded any worry in Bogota by assuring that Russia and Venezuela have given guarantees that maneuvers will not take place in bordering waters.

Lavrov arrived last night in Bogota and this morning met with Minister Bermudez at the Palacio de San Carlos.

After the press round, Lavrov made a brief visit to the Gold Museum, one of the emblematic cultural sites of the city and finally had a private meeting with president Alvaro Uribe.
