No Drivers Test With Automatics
Beginning today, the road test portion of the drivers exam cannot be done with an automatic vehicle. Drivers who show up at the Dirección de Educación Vial or any of regional centres for drivers test, in an automatic vehicle will be refused the test.

Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) officials say that an automatic vehicle does not allow the examiner to determine if the driver can properly handle a vehicle going up and down hills. The play between accelerator and clutch is an important part of driving, according to transport officials and thus the reason for eliminating all drivers testing in automatic.

According to Rosaura Montero, viceministra de Transportes, the decision will mean for better drivers on the roads. Montero said that many who take and pass the test on automatics become a risk when they begin to learn with a stick shift.

MOPT data reveals that between 30% and 35% of drivers who take the road test portion of the drivers exam fail.
