Public Sector Workers On Strike in Chile
Santiago - About 450,000 public sector workers in Chile on Monday declared an indefinite strike for higher wages after salary negotiations with the government stalled.

The workers sought a salary increase of 14.5 percent for 2009 while the government offered a 6.5 percent raise.

Government spokesman Francisco Vidal said the strike was unfair because it would affect thousands of Chilean citizens.

"The fair demands of the fiscal workers (government workers) cannot be over the rights of the citizens, who have (a) right to come to all the public offices," Vidal said.

Vidal said the Treasury and Labor ministers in charge of the negotiations will make a new offer to the workers.

Because of the strike, garbage has accumulated in the streets.

"We hope this strike would be solved during the day," Vidal said.
