Sonia Chang-Diaz Grabs
Massachusetts Senate
Seat
Sonia Chang Díaz,
daughter of Costa Rican
and former NASA
astronaut, Franklin
Chang Díaz, was the
senate seat for the sate
of Massachusetts, as
state that is larger
that Costa Rica and with
a population of 6
million.
Sonia, a 30 year old
school teacher, had
dreamed of being a state
senator and Tuesday got
her wish, winning out
the incumbent Sen.
Dianne Wilkerson by a
landslide.
Diaz said “This campaign
was built on a simple
and powerful premise: We
should expect more from
our elected leaders to
uphold the high standard
that we’re looking for."
“Tonight,” she said,
“let’s celebrate the
things that went right
in politics and toast
the things that will go
right tomorrow.”
Diaz garnered 55,447
votes, or 92%, to 3,047,
or 5%, cast for William
Leonard of the Socialist
Workers Party. Another
1,470 votes, or 2.45%,
were write-ins. It was
unclear how many of
those were for
Wilkerson.
Diaz lost to Wilkerson
two years ago but beat
the 54-year-old veteran
politician in
September’s primary for
the Democratic
nomination. Wilkerson
came back with a sticker
campaign. Then came the
shocking federal
surveillance photos,
purportedly of Wilkerson
stuffing cash in her
bra. Wilkerson refused
to resign after her
arrest Oct. 28 on
federal charges she took
$23,500 in bribes.
Though she finally
suspended her campaign
Friday under pressure
from black ministers, a
handful of voters stuck
with her.
Diaz, told dozens of
jubilant supporters at
the Alchemist Lounge in
Jamaica Plain that her
father taught her to
reach for the stars, and
whose mother, a social
worker, showed her
there’s no greater
calling than to serve
others. |
