Obama's Win Welcomed in
Costa Rica
Costa Rican politicians
on all sides of the
fence are positive about
Barack Obama's election
victory on Tuesday.
Obama, winning a
majority of the U.S.
Latino vote, won the
election with a total of
349 electoral college
votes to the 162 votes
for his rival, John
McCain.
"I think Obama's
election is big, big for
the Unites States and
also the world", said
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias.
Arias, who heads the
Partido Liberacion
Nacional (PLC) added
that Obama is "new
blood" and compared
Obama's idealism to that
of John F. Kennedy and
has high hopes for Obama
doing a great job with
the U.S.'s foreign
policy.
Obama's victory face was
on the front page of all
Spanish language dailys
yesterday and his name
in every conversation be
it with Ticos or
foreigners, who are
welcoming the change
after eight years of
George W. in the White
House.
The president of the
left wing Partido Accion
Cuidadana (PAC), Epsy
Campbell, whose
ancestors migrated from
Africa to Costa Rica's
Caribbean coast said
that "Obama embodies the
fight of all our black
ancestors who fought for
the rights of our
people".
Many legislative members
of the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC),
a party that has
historically been a
supporter of of
Republican policies,
rooted for an Obama win.
Ana Helena Chacón, said
"I hope relations with
Latin America improves".
The Ministerio de
Relaciones Exteriores y
Culto de Costa Rica
(Foreign Ministry)
released an official
statement congratulating
Barack Obama and
celebrating his status
as the first
"African-American" to
hold the highest office
in the United States.
