Obama's Win Welcomed in Costa Rica
Costa Rican politicians on all sides of the fence are positive about Barack Obama's election victory on Tuesday. Obama, winning a majority of the U.S. Latino vote, won the election with a total of 349 electoral college votes to the 162 votes for his rival, John McCain.

"I think Obama's election is big, big for the Unites States and also the world", said Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias.

Arias, who heads the Partido Liberacion Nacional (PLC) added that Obama is "new blood" and compared Obama's idealism to that of John F. Kennedy and has high hopes for Obama doing a great job with the U.S.'s foreign policy.

Obama's victory face was on the front page of all Spanish language dailys yesterday and his name in every conversation be it with Ticos or foreigners, who are welcoming the change after eight years of George W. in the White House.

The president of the left wing Partido Accion Cuidadana (PAC), Epsy Campbell, whose ancestors migrated from Africa to Costa Rica's Caribbean coast said that "Obama embodies the fight of all our black ancestors who fought for the rights of our people".

Many legislative members of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), a party that has historically been a supporter of of Republican policies, rooted for an Obama win. Ana Helena Chacón, said "I hope relations with Latin America improves".

The Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto de Costa Rica (Foreign Ministry) released an official statement congratulating Barack Obama and celebrating his status as the first "African-American" to hold the highest office in the United States.
