Eve of Andean Forum in
Ecuador
Quito - Ecuadorian
authorities are putting
Monday the final touches
on the Second Andean
Meeting of the
International
Humanitarian Right, to
be run November 4-5
here, attended by
delegates from Bolivia,
Colombia, Peru and this
country.
The meeting, to be
carried out in the
Foreign Affairs Ministry
building, will
facilitate exchange and
cooperation between the
Humanitarian Rights
Commissions of the
Andean Community member
nations.
Four working tables will
analyze issues related
to measures stipulated
on the use of force and
protection of people in
riot situations.
Participants in the
event will also evaluate
collaboration between
the Andean nations in
relevant projects for
the implementation of
the international
humanitarian right.
Emilio Izquierdo,
assistant secretary of
the Multilateral
Relations department of
the Ecuadorian Foreign
Affairs Ministry, and
Cristopher Martin,
regional delegate of the
International Red Cross
Committee, will be in
charge of the opening
ceremony.
Also attending are
executives from the
Ecuadorian Red Cross,
and Heike Spieker, chief
of the International Law
Department at the German
Red Cross.
According to official
sources, Ecuador is the
nation with largest
number of Latin American
refugees, because nearly
one million Colombians
are living in this
country.
Those people fled the
armed conflict in
Colombia, which has been
worsened with current
President Alvaro Uribe.
The acceptance and
attention to those
citizens have been
recognized by the UN
High Commissioner for
Refugees, who supports
the national government
in these works in the
country's northern
community. |
