Panama - Juan Jovane, an
independent candidate
for Panama's presidency
in the 2009 elections,
is betting on social
projects in his
political platform.
According to Internet
reports from the Popular
Alternative Party,
Jovane's program
includes immediate
emergency measures
against poverty and
hunger, and the freezing
family shopping basket
prices and salaries
He also plans to improve
the quality and coverage
of health services, and
provide access to water
as a fundamental human
right.
Actions will also focus
on food security and
sovereignty,
rationalization of power
generation and
telephony.
The independent
presidential candidate
favors fighting
corruption and the
setting up of a national
constituent assembly to
reorganize public
institutions.
Jovane's candidacy is
being hindered by the
election law, which says
that presidential
candidates must belong
to legally-established
political parties.
