Panama Candidate Bets on Social Projects
Panama - Juan Jovane, an independent candidate for Panama's presidency in the 2009 elections, is betting on social projects in his political platform.

According to Internet reports from the Popular Alternative Party, Jovane's program includes immediate emergency measures against poverty and hunger, and the freezing family shopping basket prices and salaries

He also plans to improve the quality and coverage of health services, and provide access to water as a fundamental human right.

Actions will also focus on food security and sovereignty, rationalization of power generation and telephony.

The independent presidential candidate favors fighting corruption and the setting up of a national constituent assembly to reorganize public institutions.

Jovane's candidacy is being hindered by the election law, which says that presidential candidates must belong to legally-established political parties.

The list of presidential candidates includes Balbina Herrera (Democratic Revolutionary Party), Ricardo Martinelli (Democratic Change), Juan Carlos Varela (Pro-Panama Party) and Guillermo Endara (Homeland's Moral Vanguard).
