Seafood Sales Drop 50%
The food poising of more
than 100 people at the
Princess Marina seafood
restaurant in Moravia
has been responsible for
a drop of 50% of seafood
sales, sector sources
say.
The food poising was
found to be E. coli
caused by poor food
management according to
the th Minister María
Luisa Avila, after the
AyA - water and sewer -
utility ruled out that
the poising was from
possible contaminated
water in a nearby well
used exclusively by the
restaurant.
AyA officials said they
found fecal matter in
the well's water but
cannot say for sure that
it was the source of the
contamination and
illnesses.
The restaurant was shut
down by Health officials
after it found more
health code violations.
The Moravia restaurant
is one of a chain of
restaurants Princess
Marina operates in the
Central Valley.
Health officials say
that it is safe to eat
seafood and that the
Moravia incident was an
isolated one and not
resulting from tainted
fish but rather
contaminated during the
cleaning and preparing
process.
"It is entirely safe to
seafood", said Avila,
easing concerns of the
population and fishermen
and restaurant owners
around the country.
Others are blaming the
drop in the sale of
seafood to the rising
prices in gasoline and
consumer goods. |
