San José Airport Police Busts Luggage Looting Gang
Costa Rican authorities gave a hard blow to a criminal gang dedicated to looting luggage at the Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaria in San José.

Cellular telephones, video and still cameras, watches and other jewellery, were all part of the loot that was confiscated by authorities on Tuesday.

Stephen Madden, of the policía aeroportuaria (airport police) said that the gang tried to circumvent a police net set up at the airport. However, authorities were able to nad the gang and the stolen items.

Authorities say that the group faked the operation of a cargo company working the terminal area and responsible for more than ¢2 billion colones (almost us$ million dollars) worth of stolen merchandise.

Madden added that the gang did not just work the internal part of the airport, but are also responsible for a number of assault outside the airport installation, targeting tourists mainly.

The airport police is asking anyone who has been a victim to call 2442 0575.
