Costa Rican Coffee
Enjoyed Around the World
Santa María de Dota is a
traditional Costa Rican
town, with a plaza,
church, local bar and
school, but is also the
site of one the best
coffee of the world,
where Coopedota produces
some 120.000 quintals
(100 pounds) each
harvest. San Marcos is
another such town and
home of Coopetarrazú
producing 145.000
quintals per harvest.
Both Costa Rican towns
are made famous by
Starbucks as it
Coopedate and
Coopertarrazú are two
Costa Rican exclusive
suppliers where their
coffee is available not
only in the United
States, but also in
Canada, Japan,
Australia, Germany,
France, Spain, Belgium,
Switzerland and many
other countries where
Starbucks operates its
stores.
Roberto Mata, manager of
Coopedota, says that the
climatic conditions and
geography of the area
known as Los Santos is
the key to their great
coffee, where the
altitude reaches 1.500
metres above sea level.
Carlos Rivera, manager
of Coopetarrazú, adds
that the local
conditions contribute to
the production of a
coffee with great
acidity, excellent aroma
and full body.
Both managers say that
their production process
is much more stringent
that other coffee
producers in Costa Rica.
