Former Nicaragua President Speaking At US State Colleges
He was the vice president of Nicaragua from 1984 to 1990. But Sergio Ramirez is also a leading literary figure and intellectual in Spanish-speaking countries. He has published more than 30 books, nine of them fiction, and has won many honors for his work.

Now Curbstone Press, based in Willimantic, has published an English translation by Michael B. Miller of Ramírez's novel "Margarita, How Beautiful the Sea" (Curbstone, cloth $24.95, paperback $15.95).

The story tells the history of Nicaragua over a 50-year period beginning in 1907, using myth and real events and exploring how memory influences the appreciation of the past and the reality of the present.

Ramírez will make several appearances in Connecticut to discuss his book.
