Jacó Construction At
Risk From Seismic
Actitivity
More than half of the
construction in Jacó do
not comply with the
requirements of the
Código Sísmico,
according to a study by
the Colegio Federado de
Ingenieros (CFIA).
The report includes
information gathered on
the construction of
homes, hotels,
commercial centres and
swimming pools.
The CFIA report
indicates that eight of
the 25 buildings
analyzed could suffer
damage in the event of
an earthquake between 3
and 5 on the Richter
scale, according to the
executive director of
the Colegio, Olman
Vargas. Many of the
other buildings are
expected to suffer
damage during stronger
quakes.
According to Vargas, the
CFIA will continue to
follow up on the
construction problem and
especially focus on the
eight analyzed.
Irene Campos of the
Instituto Costarricense
de Cemento y del
Concreto added that the
options available are to
reinforce the bases or
demolition.
The study was carried
out in October 2007.
