Contraloría
Denies ICE Power Plant
Purchases
The Contraloría General
de la República (CGR) -
Comptroller's office -
has denied the Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE)
authorization to
purchase two thermal
power plants from the
Grupo Pujol-Martí citing
that the purchase price
as higher that the
estimated value of the
power plants.
ICE has so far paid
us$22 million dollars to
Pujol-Martí for the
rental of the plants.
The deal to purchase the
plants is now for us$25
million.
ICE says it will
continue to request the
Contraloría for approval
with a revised
submission of new
documentation that
intends to sway the
Contraloría's
consideration.
The Contraloría's
decision may affect
ICE's short-term ability
to provide enough power
to meet the growing
demands.
However, Elberth Durán,
a spokesperson for ICE,
says that the country's
energy needs are not
dependent on the rental
or the purchase of the
equipment, just that the
Institución made the
decision to purchase
rather than rent.
Durán added that ICE may
decide to renegotiate
the purchase price with
the Grupo Pujol-Martí
before submitting a new
request.
The plants that ICE
intends to purchase are
located in Limón and
Orotina, Alajuela, and
produce 24 Megawatts of
power. |
