Panama to Defend Women
Rights
The Panamanian
Ombudsman's office
announced the adoption
of new strategies in
defense of the rights of
women, children,
indigenous groups and
immigrants, according to
a report released on
Saturday.
The application of
measures in this regard
was agreed on during a
meeting of the Central
American Council of
Human Rights Ombudsmen
recently held in Costa
Rica, according to La
Prensa daily.
Participants also agreed
to give priority to the
phenomena of feminicide
and the trade in women
for sexual exploitation,
the source said.
Quoting figures provided
by the Ombudsman's
office, the daily said
that 188 women were
killed in Panama by
their spouses or former
partners in 1999-2005.
This reveals the effects
of family violence on
the country, the
Ombudsman's Office
Department of Women's
Rights indicated in its
report. |
