Arias Asks VP To Delay
Her Presidential
Candidacy Decision
Costa Rican president,
Óscar Arias, asked that
vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla, hold back on
her decision to announce
her candidacy for the
2010 presidential
elections.
"I have asked that, if
she is decides to run,
to announce it at late
as possible. She has an
important task facing in
her in terms of national
security and do not want
to see her leave her
ministry (ministerio de
Jusitica) and the
vice-presidency, but it
is a decision that I
will respect", said
Arias.
The president did not
say if he will support
Chinchilla, but neither
did he deny her
support.,
Earlier this week, Arias
said that Costa Rica is
ready for a woman
president and that any
decision by "Laura" is
of her own choosing.
Chinchilla has been a
prominent figure in the
Arias government taking
on the dual role of the
first vice-president and
that of minister of
Justice, a role she held
in a previous
administrations.
Laura has also gotten
major public attention
as the country faces one
of its worst insecurity
crisis.
