Migración Gets New
Computer Donated By
Chamber to Process
Residencies
The Dirección General de
Migración y Extranjería
- immigration service -
is promising quicker
attention to the 300.000
foreigners with
residency in Costa Rica
with the purchase and
installation of a new
computer system.
The Costa Rican -
American Chamber of
Commerce (AmCham) made
the ¢5 million colones
(us$10.000) contribution
for the purchase of the
computer equipment,
seeing the necessity
foreigners when it came
time to process their
residency.
The new computer system
will allow the
immigration service to
update information on
the 300.000 who hold
foreign resident status
in Costa Rica, creating
digital files complete
with all the required
information when it came
time for renewal of
their "cédula de
residencia" and other
immigration documents.
The Director de
Migración, Mario Zamora,
had been working with
North American
businessmen who made
their point on the
immigration service
shortcomings and the
need to upgrade their
technology, especially
when it came time to
processing residency
applications.
According to Zamora,
lacking computer
equipment was one of the
major stumbling blocks
for the service in
processing both foreign
residency applications
and passports and other
processes for nationals.
The executive director
of AmCham, Lynda Solar,
said that this is one
example of how the
private and public
sectors can work
together to better
things. |
