Argentinean Farmers
Still on Strike
Argentinean farmers are
on their sixth day of a
strike to protest
against the government's
agricultural policy,
especially the increase
in deductions to exports
of some cereals.
The leaders of the
Argentinean Rural
Confederations (CRA),
the Argentinean Rural
Society, the Argentinean
Agrarian Federation
(FAA) and the
Agricultural
Inter-Cooperative
Confederation demanded
again to hold talks with
authorities, which have
refused to meet with the
strikers.
"This means that the
force of the measure
does not yield," said
FAA President Eduardo
Buzzi.
According to reports,
more than 100
demonstrations and
partial roadblocks took
place throughout the
country on Monday,
affecting the cereal and
meat markets.
Rural producers from
different sectors in the
province of Cordoba
gathered in several
areas of the region and
staged roadblocks and
demonstrations in the
cities of Tancacha, Bell
Ville, Berrotaran,
Laboulaye, Chazon, Rio
Cuarto and Jesus Maria.
Another 400 workers in
the northern sector of
La Pampa blocked roads
near Realico, leaving at
least 300 vehicles
stranded.
"We will continue with
this until the policy on
cereals, milk and meat
is changed," said CRA
President Mario Llambias,
who hinted that the
rural protest that began
last Thursday might go
on indefinitely. |
