Raul Castro Attends
Baragua Protest
Anniversary
Cuban President Raul
Castro presided over on
Saturday the celebration
of the 130th anniversary
of the Baragua Protest
led by Gen. Antonio
Maceo against Spanish
colonialism.
In the same place where
the meeting between
Maceo and Spanish Gen.
Arsenio Martinez Campos
took place in Mangos de
Baragua, currently Julio
Antonio Mella
municipality, thousands
of residents gathered to
pay tribute to those who
played a leading role in
the rebel action.
After nearly 10 years of
struggle against the
Spanish military power,
with the Liberation Army
undermined by division,
the Zanjon Pact was
signed in Camaguey in
1878, putting an end to
the war without having
achieved independence or
the abolition of
slavery.
Maceo, who was
successfully confronting
colonial troops in
eastern Cuba, strongly
opposed the severe blow
and demonstrated his
disagreement with the
pact and his
determination to
continue war until the
main objectives of
pro-independence Cubans
were achieved.
Described by Jose Marti
as "one of the most
glorious events in our
history", the Baragua
Protest is seen as a
symbol of revolutionary
resistance in the
struggles for national
independence. |
