Many Guatemalan Children Abused
Seventy percent -7 of every 10 - Guatemalan children suffer some kind of physical or psychological mistreatment at home, in school or on the street, humanitarian Casa Alianza organization denounced.

Marking the Day of Non-Violence against Children in Guatemala, Casa Alianza Director Claudia Rivera lamented the persistence of these practices and called on the population to join hands with the government to wipe them out.

At least 478 children were killed in 2007, and in January 2008 alone the number of children killed reached 80, Rivera told Prensa Latina.

In her opinion, this is an obvious consequence of a widespread wave of violence affecting all sectors of the population, mainly the most defenseless.

"As a society, we must respond to the challenge of offering security to the kids, and this task is beyond the State's responsibility; it is up to all of us," she stressed.
