OAS Hopes: More
Colombia/Ecuador Effort
Organization of American
States Secretary General
Jose Miguel Insulza said
on Wednesday he hoped
for more collaboration
between the governments
of Colombia and Ecuador
to overcome their recent
diplomatic crisis.
In a press conference in
Bogota at the end of an
OAS delegation tour of
both nations, Insulza
insisted on a spirit of
cooperation over
differences.
He also said that OAS
will see to it that both
nations fully comply
with agreements
regarding security on
their common border.
Insulza failed to give
any detail on what the
commission observed in
the Ecuadorean area
attacked by Colombian
troops on March 1st, an
incident that triggered
the worst diplomatic
crisis between both
governments.
He also failed to refer
to a visit to a southern
Colombian area yesterday
and to his meetings with
President Alvaro Uribe
and other government
officials.
Insulza said the
commission will include
all the information
gathered in both nations
in a report to be
presented in a meeting
of foreign ministers to
be held at OAS
headquarters in
Washington on Monday,
March 17.
The objective of this
meeting will not be to
discuss the differences
maintained by the
governments of Quito and
Bogota, but rather to
propose commitments to
prevent similar
incidents from happening
again.
