Infant Death Rate Rises
in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has
registered infant
mortality rates of 10.05
deaths per 1000 live
births in 2007,
according to statistics
the Instituto
Nacional de Estadística
y Censos (INEC)
-the National Institute
of Statistic and Census
- revealed Monday.
Data indicates a 0.34
per 1000 increase
compared to 2006, when
it was 9.71 and is the
highest since 2003, when
it was 10.1.
INEC registered 73,144
births and 735 deaths in
the country.
The main causes of death
of children less than
one year old are
respiratory and
cardiovascular
disorders, those related
with the duration of
gestation, fetal growth
and congenital
malformations.
