Chavez Calls for Peace
in Latin America
President of Venezuela
Hugo Chavez urged for a
path of peace, not war
on Friday, in view of
the conflict in Latin
America in the wake of
Colombia's aggression
into Ecuadorian
territory.
Speaking at the Group of
Rio Summit in Santo
Domingo, Chavez wished
for the meeting to
contribute to a rational
solution to the dispute.
In this regard, he
warned that the doctrine
defended by his
Colombian peer Alvaro
Uribe only leads to a
dangerous
regionalization and
internationalization of
this conflict.
He considered that the
principle of sovereignty
claimed by Uribe is
similar to that of US
President George W. Bush
and can only lead Latin
America to disaster,
mainly in the interests
of the United States.
Chavez said there is
still time to prevent a
war and stressed that
Venezuela wants peace
and will do all in its
power for it to be the
path followed by Latin
American peoples,
starting with respect
among States.
He disagreed with Bogota
in calling the members
of FARC (Revolutionary
Armed Forces of
Colombia) terrorists.
"To us they are
insurgent forces,
guerrilla forces, and it
must be recognized this
way to find a road to
peace," he insisted.
Chavez warned that the
long-standing Colombian
conflict has no military
solution and reiterated
his government's
willingness to
contribute to the
humanitarian exchange
between the parties in
conflict. |
