Semana Santa Brings Supermarket Price Cuts
A number of supermarkets are slashing prices for Semana Santa (Easter Week) to attract more customers, offering huge discounts on seasonal products, contrary to the custom of raising prices as it has been in the past.

Tuna, sardines and other fish products and the seasonal miel de coco and ayote and the traditional chiverre head the list of products with price cuts at Wal-Mart which operates the Mas X Menos, Palí and Maxi Bodegas supermarkets and the Hiper Mas department stores.

Wal-Mart says it is looking for ways to avoid customers overspending.

At the GESSA, the group that operates the Jumbo, Perimercados and Super Compro supermarkets, it too is slashing prices for Semana Santa.

Elizabeth Chacón, marketing manager at GEESA, said that customers can even expect free products with the purchases as part of their promotional campaign.

Chacón added that this weekend, fresh products like shrimp, octopus, whole fish, for instance, will all have a 25% discount.

In addition, Chacón explained, that on March 14 the Jumbo supermarkets will hold a "“Noche de Insomnio” (insomnia night) where specific products will, on March 14, have their prices cut between 30% and 50% between midnight and 6:00am.

Other supermarkets like AutoMercado and MegaSuper are all offering their own deals on seasonal products.

Most supermarkets will be open on Good Thursday and Good Friday, however, will have restricted hours, closing by 6:00pm on those days and open normal hours before and after, including Easter Sunday.
