Panamanian And Tico
Arrested in
Assassination of Five
Panamanians
Two men were detained by
the Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ)
- judicial police -
detachement in Ciudad
Neilly believed to be
tied to the killing of
five Panamanians near
the Costa Rica - Panama
border at the end of
January.
The OIJ press office
this is the first of a
series of detentions in
the case, as
investigators attempt to
piece the puzzle of the
execution style murder
of the five men.
The two men detained are
identified only by their
last names, a Costa
Rican, Arias Rodríguez
and a Panamanian
national, Melquiades
Espinoza Villarreal,
known locally as "Anel".
Anel is believed to be
the ringleader of the
gang that carried out
the execution that
authorities believe was
over a dispute between
drug dealers.
Jorge Rojas, director of
the OIJ, said that the
arrests were made on
Friday and that more
people will be in
custody soon.
