Cellular Phones To Go Silent At Midnight
A reminder that all cellular phones in Costa Rica will stop working at the stroke of midnight tonight and will not be online again until 6:00am Monday morning.

The shutdown of the cellular network is to allow the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) to run trials on the new eight digit number system that is scheduled to go into effect on March 20.

Claudio Bermúdez, subgerente de telecomunicaciones del ICE, explained that starting at midnight technicians will be testing messaging service, international calling and local calling features and of course to ensure that it links correctly to ICE's billing system.

Similar tests were run on fixed land ines between February 13 and 14.

Our apologies, for yesterday's announcement that the cellular phones would go silent at 12:01am Sunday.
