Traffic Problems
Continue To Plague San
José
Four separated accidents
and road repairs
accumulated to create a
traffic chaos in the
area known as La Uruca,
as traffic on the
General Cañas in the
direction of San José
backed up to Plaza
Cariari and at an almost
stand still at the Juan
Pablo II bridge.
The four accidents were
located near the Shell
gasoline station under
the bridge, by the
Momumento de Agua (water
monument some 300 metres
away), by the Hospital
Mexico and the fourth by
Abonos Agro in the
Radial de la Uruca.
Add to that the work
being carried out by
work crews on the Radial
when earlier this week
another work crew broke
an underground water
pipe, creating a
gigantic crater almost
in front of the La
Cosevi.
And to make matters
worse, the Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) has
been carrying out
resurfacing work on the
Radial all week. The
work is being carried
out at night, but the
unfinished work has left
different grade levels
between the lanes,
slowing down traffic.
And this is a "pay"
weekend, meaning more
cars on the road as the
custom of driving to
work during pay periods
adds to the traffic
congestion.
The net effect yesterday
afternoon was a total
collapse of La Uruca,
one of the major
transportation routes in
San José.
According to Marvin
Jiménez, a Tránsito
(traffic) official in
San José, the accidents
were all fender benders,
nothing serious.
However, the fact that
there were four in such
a small distance from
each other and that the
vehicles cannot be moved
until a Tránsito
official is on the
scene, just added to the
congestion.
"The truth is that it
was a really difficult
situation", in the words
of Jiménez.
